I Don't Think This Would Work in Nebraska
Yet another reason to love life in the tropics - you can have gigantic, stone manatees holding your mailbox. Anywhere else, this might not be possible. And by the way, I just want you all to know that this is not my mailbox nor is it the mailbox of anyone related to me and that if I had a mailbox I would instead have a lifesized mermaid with really big boobs holding it up and she would be painted in realistic flesh tones. What kinds of unique mailboxes do they have in other parts of the country, because I've only witnessed this phenomenon down here.

In Texas, the most common weird mailbox I have seen would be a John Deere tractor.
A manatee? Really!
Oh my. Having lived 21 years in the Cornhusker state, I can pretty safely say one like this does not exist there. There are, however, an insane amount of Go Big Red, corn and other football themed mailboxes. I'm not sure which is worse.
In Indiana, it's popular to create large barbed-wire sculptures around the post holding up your mailbox. Eagles, horses, etc. Oh, and those creepy "silhouette man" cut-outs are big too.
rLots of people here at the NJ shore have those too. Manatees, dolphins, sharks, mermaids, wide-mouth bass, giant tunas and other sea life are routinely holding up someones beach house mailbox, only most of the time the mailbox is inside the open mouth of the creature so you have to stick your arm down its throat to get your mail out. Whatever floats their boats!! LOL!
Apparently, it's more important to be chic in Santa B than fun, but I LOVE this mailbox. Okay, don't know about actually owning it, but I'd love to be its neighbor.
I saw one yesterday that was an old John Deere plow - the kind you pull behind a horse. At least, it was painted Deere colors. This is in Central California, home of some of the nations best farm land and those happy cows you see on TV.
Oh, and big heavy steel, concrete, and brick mailboxes are very popular due to the prevalence of mailbox baseball.
in the country up here in Illinois it's fairly common to find mailboxes held up by heavy chain that is welded into a rough question mark shape "?" the bottom of the question mark either put into the ground or welded onto a metal wheel and the mailbox is attached to the end of the tip of the question mark
We have lots of fish mailboxes where the mail goes in the mouth of said fish.
Also, bears and moose and the state bird, the loon.
Yup, lots of loons here in MN.
I live in Wisconsin, and someone in my neighborhood has a cow mailbox, and the rear end of the cow is where you place the mail.
I would not own one of those!
You should *SO* submit this photo to the lolcat builder for http://icanhascheezburger.com/
They have a whole "thing" on walruses (walri?):

I'm fond of the crankshaft of a V8 or other old scrap metal welded into a pedestal style of mailbox.
I've seen those all over but I'd bet they don't make it to your neck of the woods.
and secretmom, the cornhuskers are pretty bad right now but maybe not as bad as the manatees (I'm sure there's a school out htere iwth a manateee as a mascot)
Here in Omaha, Nebraska, I there is a mailbox that is a miniature replica of the house it is in front of.
